The Legacy of the Second Bucktails

Organized in 1862, the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers quickly became known as the Second Bucktails, proudly carrying on the traditions established by the famed Original Bucktail Regiment. Recruited largely from the same northern Pennsylvania region, these soldiers earned a reputation for exceptional courage, discipline, and unwavering determination.

The regiment fought with distinction in many of the Civil War's most significant battles, including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Appomattox. At Gettysburg, the 149th played a vital role in the fierce defense of McPherson Ridge on July 1, 1863, helping delay advancing Confederate forces during the opening hours of the battle.

This historical design honors the men who proudly served from 1862–1865, preserving the legacy of Pennsylvania's Second Bucktail Regiment and the courage that made them one of the Union Army's most respected fighting units.
