The Original Bucktails
Organized in 1861 under Colonel Thomas Leiper Kane, the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteers quickly earned the nickname "Bucktails" after the distinctive white-tailed deer tails worn in their caps. Recruited from Pennsylvania's rugged northern forests, these expert marksmen became one of the Union Army's elite regiments, earning respect on battlefields throughout the Civil War.
The regiment fought with distinction in many of the war's most significant engagements, including Dranesville, Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania. Their bravery, discipline, and unwavering loyalty established a legacy that continues to inspire historians and Civil War enthusiasts today.
This design preserves that legacy with a historic regimental portrait that reflects the courage, sacrifice, and enduring brotherhood of the men who proudly served as the Original Bucktails.
