Major General Daniel Edgar Sickles commanded the III Corps of the Army of the Potomac during the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 2, 1863, he famously advanced his corps forward from its assigned defensive position without orders, creating a vulnerable salient that was heavily attacked by Confederate forces. Although his corps suffered devastating losses and Sickles lost his right leg during the fighting, his controversial decision has remained one of the most debated tactical actions of the Civil War. After the war, Sickles received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg and became instrumental in preserving the Gettysburg Battlefield for future generations.
