Major General James Ewell Brown "J.E.B." Stuart commanded the Cavalry Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and became legendary for his daring reconnaissance missions, rapid cavalry raids, and exceptional battlefield leadership. Serving under General Robert E. Lee, Stuart played important roles in the Peninsula Campaign, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Bristoe Campaign, and the Overland Campaign. His bold cavalry operations earned him a reputation as one of the Civil War's most skilled mounted commanders. Stuart was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern on May 11, 1864, while defending Richmond, Virginia.
