Colonel Thomas Leiper Kane organized the famous Bucktails in 1861 from the skilled woodsmen, hunters, and frontiersmen of northern Pennsylvania. Officially designated as the 42nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, the regiment also became known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves and 1st Pennsylvania Rifles. Their distinctive bucktail worn in the hat quickly became one of the most recognizable symbols of the Union Army.
